Worked example
The form above starts with the tiles JAEORST and an X on the board. That gives 25 playable words. These are the highest scoring by tile value:
| Word | Your tiles used | Board letter | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| extras | E T R A S | X | 13 |
| storax | S T O R A | X | 13 |
| taxers | T A E R S | X | 13 |
| oxters | O T E R S | X | 13 |
| texas | T E A S | X | 12 |
| extra | E T R A | X | 12 |
EXTRAS scores 13: E 1 + X 8 + T 1 + R 1 + A 1 + S 1. The X counts even though it is already on the board, because a word scores all of its letters. On a real board, bonus squares under your new tiles add more.
How the Words With Friends cheat works
Your tiles
Type up to 12 letters. Seven is a normal rack, but extra letters let you plan ahead or try a swap. A ? is a blank tile: it can be any letter and scores 0. When a word needs a letter you don't have, the finder uses the blank for it; when you do have the letter, your real tile is used first, so the points shown are the best you can get from that rack.
Board letters
Most good plays hook onto something already on the board. The filters say which board letters the word must use, and those letters are free: they do not come from your tiles.
- Contains: the word must include these letters together, anywhere. Put a single letter like
Xto play through it. - Starts with / Ends with: the board letters sit at the start or end, for example adding to the front of ING.
- Board pattern: for an exact gap, type board letters in place and
?for each empty square.?A??Efinds five-letter words with A second and E fifth. - Length: only words of that many letters, handy when space on the board is limited.
Every result uses at least one of your tiles, since a turn must place one. The finder checks each word in our list: the board letters must fit where you said, and the rest of the word must come from your tiles, with blanks covering any gaps.
Points
Points use the Words With Friends tile values, which differ from Scrabble on 12 letters: B, C, M and P are worth 4 instead of 3, V is worth 5, and L, N and U are worth 2. See the full comparison table. The score shown is tile value only. Double and triple letter or word squares, crossing words and the 35-point bonus for using all seven tiles depend on where the word goes, so they are not included here.
When to use the board solver instead
This page answers "what words can I make with these tiles and that letter?". If you want to know the single best move, copy your whole board into the Words With Friends board solver. It tries every square, checks the crossing words and scores each move with all bonuses.
Limits
Our dictionary is the public-domain ENABLE list (172,823 words). Words With Friends grew out of ENABLE but has edited its list since, so the occasional rare word may be rejected. The finder also cannot see your board: it does not know whether a word physically fits or forms invalid words alongside other tiles.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a word that uses a letter on the board?
Put the letter in Contains (board). It is treated as free, so the word only needs your tiles for the other letters.
What does ? mean in the tiles box?
A blank tile. It can stand for any letter and is worth 0 points.
Do the points include bonus squares?
No, only tile values. For scores with double and triple squares, use the board solver.
Why are some Words With Friends values different from Scrabble?
Zynga set its own tile values. For example V is 5 in Words With Friends and 4 in Scrabble, and N is 2 instead of 1.
Is this affiliated with Zynga?
No. It is an independent word finder.
