How to play Word Wheel
- Tap the letters (or type them) to spell a word, then press Enter.
- Each word must have at least 4 letters, include the centre letter, and use only the letters on the wheel. You can repeat a letter as often as you like.
- A 4-letter word scores 1 point. Longer words score 1 point per letter. A word that uses all seven letters scores 7 extra points.
- Points move you up the ranks: Starter, Warming up, Getting there, Solid, Sharp, Wordsmith, Lexicon, Wheel master, Full wheel. On the daily wheel, the clock stops when you reach Wordsmith (40% of the day's points) and you can save your time. Keep going to fill the whole wheel.
- Shuffle moves the outer letters around, which often helps you spot new words.
About the words
Each wheel is built from a 7-letter word with seven different letters (and no S, so plurals don't pad the list). The answer list is every everyday word in our public-domain ENABLE dictionary that fits the wheel, as long as Open English WordNet defines it or its base form, which keeps out names and abbreviations. Offensive words are removed. Most wheels have 20 to 70 words and at least one seven-letter word. There are 366 wheels in the rotation, so the daily wheel doesn't repeat for a year.
A real word you know might still be missing if it's rare; the list sticks to words people actually use. To see every word a set of letters can make, try the word unscrambler.
Tips
- Start with short words around the centre letter, then add endings such as -ER, -ED or -ING if the letters allow.
- The seven-letter word often starts or ends with a common prefix or suffix: look for RE-, -ION, -ITY or -ATE.
- Letters repeat for free: if you have L and E, try LEVEL, BELL or FELL.
Frequently asked questions
Is Word Wheel the same as the New York Times Spelling Bee?
No. Word Wheel is our own game with its own letters, word list, scoring, ranks and wheel layout. Letter-wheel puzzles with a key centre letter have appeared in newspapers for decades. We are not affiliated with The New York Times.
Why was my word not accepted?
It needs 4 or more letters, the centre letter, and only wheel letters. It must also be in today's list, which leaves out rare words, proper nouns, hyphenated words and offensive words.
Is there a new wheel every day?
Yes. The daily wheel changes at midnight in your time zone. New wheel gives you unlimited practice wheels that are not ranked.
Is this a good spelling game for kids?
Yes. It rewards spelling real words, there are no ads, and offensive words are never accepted. Younger players can aim for the first few ranks.
