How to play

Choose a topic and a level. Today is the daily puzzle for that pair; New puzzle deals a fresh practice set.
Type the word, or tap the tiles in order. The clock starts with your first move.
Stuck? Shuffle rearranges the tiles for free, Hint reveals the next letter for a 10-second penalty, and Skip sends the word to the back of the queue.
Solve every word to stop the clock. Daily times can go on the leaderboard under a nickname.

Levels and topics

Easy: 5 words of 4–5 letters.
Medium: 8 words of 5–7 letters.
Hard: 10 words of 6–9 letters.

The 926 topic words come from Open English WordNet (CC BY 4.0): a word joins a topic when its most common meaning sits under that topic in WordNet, for example under "disease" or "medication" for Medicine. Every word is also in our ENABLE dictionary and in everyday use, and offensive words are filtered out with the LDNOOBW list (CC BY 4.0). The topics hold 53 technology, 87 medicine, 63 finance, 39 law, 100 food, 83 sports, 150 animals, 78 music, 110 travel, 98 science, 65 business words.

Scrambles never show the word itself. If your letters spell a different word from the same topic, it counts too.

Is the word scramble game free?

Yes, with no limit. Play the daily puzzle for each topic and level, then as many practice rounds as you like.

Can I use it in class or for team building?

Yes. Pick a topic that fits the lesson (Science, Medicine, Finance, Law and so on) and have everyone play the daily puzzle, then compare times on the leaderboard.

Why was my time not ranked?

Only daily puzzles are ranked, because everyone gets the same words. Practice rounds are different for each player.
