Word guess game

Guess the hidden word. After each try, a teal circle marks a letter in the right place and an amber tile with a dot marks a letter that is in the word somewhere else. Choose 4 to 7 letters: every length has a daily word with a leaderboard, and New word lets you keep playing.

How to play

  1. Pick a word length. Today is the daily word for that length; New word starts an unranked practice game.
  2. Type a real word of that length and press Enter. You get 6 tries for 4 and 5 letters and 7 for 6 and 7.
  3. Read the feedback: a teal circle is the right letter in the right spot, an amber tile with a dot is in the word but elsewhere, and a grey tile is not in the word. Repeated letters are only marked as often as they appear in the answer.
  4. Fewest guesses wins the daily leaderboard; time breaks ties.

Where the words come from

Answers are everyday words from our dictionary (the public-domain ENABLE list, ranked by how often each word appears in English Wikipedia), without plain plurals and without offensive words. Any word in the full ENABLE list is accepted as a guess. The daily answer is picked from the date, so everyone gets the same word.

Want help with a different guessing game? The Wordle solver filters answers from your colours, and the best starting words page ranks openers by letter data.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Wordle?

No. It is our own take on the classic word-guessing game (think Mastermind or Lingo) with its own look, 4 to 7-letter modes and unlimited play. It is not affiliated with The New York Times.

Can I play more than once a day?

Yes. The daily word is the one that counts for the leaderboard; press New word for as many practice rounds as you like.

Why was my word not accepted?

Guesses must be real words of the chosen length from our ENABLE dictionary. Names, abbreviations and hyphenated words are not in it.

What starting word is best?

Words with common, different letters, such as SLATE, CRANE or STARE for five letters, rule out the most in one go.
