Quordle solver

Add each word you played in Quordle once; it goes onto all four boards. Tap the tiles on each board until they match the game's colours. Every board then shows the words still possible, solved boards are marked, and the suggested next guess is picked to narrow all unsolved boards together.

Then tap each tile until it matches your game: grey → yellow → green. Every board gets the guess; set the colours board by board.

Worked example

The solver loads with a sample game: hidden words BLOOM, GRIND, PASTA, WITCH, guesses STARE and CLOUD. This is what each guess left on each board, computed by the same code that runs the solver.

BoardSTARELeftCLOUDLeftStill possible
157512FLOWN, BLOOM, BLOWN, GLOOM
21953RIGID, GRIND, VIRID
310450WANTS, TANKS, TASKS, WATTS
42409PITCH, THICK, WITCH, FITCH

An all-grey row is still useful: on board 1, STARE found nothing, yet it removed every word containing S, T, A, R, E and left 575 words.

After two guesses the boards hold 12, 3, 50, 9 words. Board 2 is closest to done with 3, so it is the one to finish first; board 3, with 50, needs another probing guess. The top suggestions, KINGS, WINGS, TYING, PANTS, test letters that split several boards at the same time.

How the Quordle solver works

Quordle hides four five-letter words and gives you nine guesses to find all of them. Each guess is played on all four boards, and each board colours it on its own: green for a letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter in that board's word but in another spot, grey for a letter that board's word does not have.

Entering your game

Type a guess and press Add. It is added to every board that is not solved yet, all grey. On each board, tap the tiles until they match: one tap moves a tile from grey to yellow, then to green, then back to grey. A board flips to Solved as soon as one row is all green, and it takes no more guesses after that, just like the game.

Filtering each board

Each board is solved on its own. For every one of the 8,636 five-letter words in our list, the solver replays your guesses as if that word were the answer and compares the colours with what you entered. Only exact matches stay. Since this replays the game's scoring (greens first, then yellows left to right, each letter used once), repeated letters need no special handling. Lists are ordered by how common each word is; rare words are faded and sit at the bottom.

Choosing the next guess

The suggestion looks at all unsolved boards together. While there are many candidates, it scores each word by how many of its letters appear in about half of the remaining words on each board. Near the end it switches to an exact count: how many different colour patterns the guess would show across the boards. It also gives a small bonus to words that could be an answer, and any board with one or two words left gets those words listed first.

Quordle strategy

Nine guesses for four words leaves at most five turns for exploring, and in practice fewer. Two or three opening words with no shared letters, such as STARE and CLOUD followed by a word with I, N, G or P, cover most of the common alphabet for all four boards. After that, solve the board with the fewest candidates first. Every solved board is one less list to track, and its letters often settle the others.

When a board is stuck on a family like _ATCH or _IGHT, do not cycle through the options one per turn. Play a word that tests three or four of the missing first letters at once. It may not win a board, but it usually saves two guesses later.

Our dictionary is the public-domain ENABLE list (172,823 words), close to but not identical to Quordle's word list, so a rare word may show here that the game does not use.

Frequently asked questions

How many guesses does Quordle give you?

Nine guesses to solve four words. Each guess counts on every board that is still open, so solving boards early leaves more turns for the rest.

Why does a board show no words?

Usually one tile colour is off by one tap, or a colour was set on the wrong board. Check letters you guessed twice: the second copy can be grey even when the letter is in the word.

Does it give today's Quordle answers?

No. It only uses the colours you enter. For a light hint, look at the word counts under each board and leave the lists alone.

What is the best first word for Quordle?

The same kind of word that works in Wordle: five different, frequent letters. See our best Wordle starting words, ranked by how many answers each leaves.

Is there a version with two or eight boards?

Yes: the Dordle solver has two boards and the Octordle solver has eight.
