Boggle solver

Type the letters on your Boggle board row by row, pick 4×4 or 5×5, and the solver finds every word you could trace through touching cubes. Results are grouped by length with official points, and tapping any word lights up its path on the board, so you can settle a disputed word in seconds.

Worked example: scoring the board above

The board loaded on this page is our own 4×4 practice board, TSRELAEINPTDGSOA read row by row. The solver finds 499 words on it (250 of them everyday words). Here is how the points add up:

LengthWordsPoints eachPoints
8 letters51155
7 letters245120
6 letters743222
5 letters1452290
4 letters1661166
3 letters85185
Total499938

The longest word, ADOPTERS, is traced like this. Each step moves to a touching cube (sideways, up, down or diagonal), and no cube is used twice:

  1. A at row 4, column 4
  2. D at row 3, column 4
  3. O at row 4, column 3
  4. P at row 3, column 2
  5. T at row 3, column 3
  6. E at row 2, column 3
  7. R at row 1, column 3
  8. S at row 1, column 2

Tap ADOPTERS in the results above to see the same path light up, with each cube numbered in order.

How the Boggle solver works

Entering your board

  1. Type the letters from the top-left cube, reading each row left to right. For the Qu cube, type just Q; the solver reads it as QU.
  2. Choose 4×4 for classic Boggle or 5×5 for Big Boggle. Big Boggle does not allow three-letter words, so the solver lists words of four letters or more there.
  3. Press Find all words, or Random board for a practice grid. The random letters are weighted by how often they appear in English, so the boards feel realistic.

Rules and scoring

Words are made by chaining cubes that touch, including diagonally, and no cube can be used twice in one word. In classic Boggle a word needs at least three letters. Points go by length: 3 or 4 letters score 1, 5 letters score 2, 6 letters score 3, 7 letters score 5, and 8 or more score 11. The Qu cube counts as two letters. Plurals and other word forms count, but capitalised and hyphenated words do not. A round lasts three minutes, and any word that another player also wrote down is crossed off every list, so the long, odd words you see here are the ones that win rounds.

What the solver does

It checks our full word list against your board. It first skips any word that needs a letter the board does not have, then tries to trace each remaining word from every cube, moving only to touching cubes it has not used yet. When a trace works, the word and that path are saved. Results are grouped by length, longest first, with everyday words before rare ones (rare words are faded). Each word is listed once, even if the board offers several paths for it.

Tips for finding more words

Limits

Our dictionary is the public-domain ENABLE list (172,823 words). Boggle lets players agree on any dictionary, so some rare words here may not count at your table, and the faded ones are the likeliest to cause a debate. The solver does not time rounds or compare players' lists.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter the Qu cube?

Type a single Q in its place. The solver treats it as QU, both for tracing words and for scoring, where it counts as two letters.

Why are three-letter words missing on a 5×5 board?

Big Boggle does not allow three-letter words, so the solver only lists words of four letters or more for 5×5 boards.

Do plurals count in Boggle?

Yes. Plurals and other forms of a word (such as past tense) are allowed. Capitalised words and hyphenated words are not.

Why are some words faded?

Faded words are rare. They are valid in our ENABLE list but players may not know them, so check with your table before claiming them.

Can I use it for Squaredle?

Squaredle grids have different sizes and holes, so use the Squaredle solver, which handles those boards.
