How the Words With Friends board solver works

Entering your board

Tap a square and type. Set Typing goes to Across or Down first, and the cursor jumps to the next square as you type, so a whole word goes in with one tap. Arrow keys move around and Backspace steps back. You only need the letters, not the bonus squares; the grid already uses the classic Words With Friends layout. Then type your rack in Your tiles, with ? for a blank, and press Find best moves. Tap a move in the list and its new tiles appear on the grid in yellow, so you can check it against your game before you play.

Which moves count

For every row and column, the solver tries each word that can be built from your tiles plus the letters already in that line, at every starting square. A move is kept only if it touches a tile on the board, does not run into another letter at either end (that would make a different, longer word), and every word it forms in the other direction is also valid. On an empty board the first word has to cover the centre star. The 40 highest-scoring moves are shown, best first.

How the points are worked out

Scores follow the Words With Friends rules. Each letter has a fixed value. A double or triple letter square multiplies only the tile placed on it this turn. Double and triple word squares multiply the whole word, and two of them in one word stack (two double words make ×4). Every crossing word you form scores on its own, including any bonus square under your new tile. Using all seven tiles adds 35 points. A blank is worth 0, so when you have one the solver uses your real tiles first and puts the blank where it costs the fewest points.

Tips for bigger scores

Sort by points, not length. A short word that puts J, Q, X or Z on a triple letter square and forms two words at once often beats a long word in open space. Playing parallel to an existing word scores every two-letter pair it creates, which is why lists of two-letter words are worth learning. Watch the triple word squares near the edges too: if your best move opens one for your opponent, the second-best move can be the smarter play. Keep an S or a blank for a later turn when the gap in points is small, since both make hooks and seven-tile plays much easier.

Limits

Our dictionary is the public-domain ENABLE list (172,823 words). Words With Friends started from ENABLE but has added and removed words since, so a rare suggestion may be rejected; the next move down usually works. Letters already on the board are counted at face value, so if one of them was played as a blank your real score will be a little lower. The solver does not know which tiles are left in the bag or what your opponent holds.

Frequently asked questions

Is the centre square a bonus square in Words With Friends?

Not on the classic board this solver uses. The first word must cover the centre star, but the star itself adds no bonus.

How do I enter a blank tile?

Type ? in Your tiles. The solver tries every letter for it and scores it as 0 points.

Why did the game reject a word the solver suggested?

We use the ENABLE word list, and the game's own list has changed over the years. Play the next move in the list instead.

Can I use it without copying my whole board?

Yes. The Words With Friends cheat finds words from your rack plus a few board letters, with WWF tile points.

Is this made by Zynga?

No. Words With Friends is a trademark of Zynga. This is an independent helper.
