Crossplay solver
Type the tiles on your NYT Crossplay board into the grid, add the seven tiles in your tray (? for a blank) and press Find best moves. You get every legal play ranked by Crossplay points, using the game's own board, its own letter values and the 40-point sweep, not Scrabble's.

Worked example
The board above starts with PLANET and CLOUD and the rack WAKEROI. The top move is AWOKE, played down from row 11, column 4, for 60 points. Here is how that score adds up:
| Letter | Square | Points |
|---|---|---|
| a | plain square | 1 |
| w | double letter | 10 |
| o | plain square | 1 |
| k | plain square | 6 |
| e | triple word | 1 |
- Letters in AWOKE: 19 points, × 3 for the word squares = 57.
- Crossing words formed by the new tiles: +3.
- Only 5 of the tiles are played, so there is no 40-point bonus.
- Total: 60.
How the Crossplay solver works
What Crossplay is
Crossplay is The New York Times' two-player word game, released as its own app in January 2026. Each player has a tray of seven tiles and builds words on a shared 15×15 board, connecting to words already played. The bag holds 100 tiles, three of them blanks. Using all seven tiles in one turn is a sweep and earns 40 bonus points. When the bag is empty, each player gets one final turn, and leftover tiles are not counted against you.
The board
The layout is not the Scrabble one. The four corners are triple letter squares, the centre star is a double word square (so the opening move scores double), and the eight triple word squares sit on the edges, three squares in from each corner. In the grid above, TW and DW are word bonuses and TL and DL are letter bonuses. A bonus counts only for a tile placed on it this turn. Letter bonuses apply first, then word bonuses, and two word bonuses in one word multiply together.
Tile values
9 letters score differently from Scrabble. B, G, J, K, L, U, V, W are worth more in Crossplay; H is worth less. Blanks score 0.
| Letter | Crossplay | Scrabble |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | 1 |
| B | 4 | 3 ≠ |
| C | 3 | 3 |
| D | 2 | 2 |
| E | 1 | 1 |
| F | 4 | 4 |
| G | 4 | 2 ≠ |
| H | 3 | 4 ≠ |
| I | 1 | 1 |
| J | 10 | 8 ≠ |
| K | 6 | 5 ≠ |
| L | 2 | 1 ≠ |
| M | 3 | 3 |
| N | 1 | 1 |
| O | 1 | 1 |
| P | 3 | 3 |
| Q | 10 | 10 |
| R | 1 | 1 |
| S | 1 | 1 |
| T | 1 | 1 |
| U | 2 | 1 ≠ |
| V | 6 | 4 ≠ |
| W | 5 | 4 ≠ |
| X | 8 | 8 |
| Y | 4 | 4 |
| Z | 10 | 10 |
What the solver checks
For each row and column it tries every word you can make from your tray plus the letters already in that line, at every position. A play is kept only if it connects to the board, does not run into another tile at either end, and every word it forms crossways is valid. Each play is scored with Crossplay's values and bonus squares, crossing words included, plus 40 for a seven-tile sweep. The top 40 plays are listed by points; tap one to see it on the grid.
Tips
K, V and W are worth 5 or 6 points here, so they pay off on a triple letter square, including the corners. The double word centre makes the first move worth more than in Words With Friends, so a strong opening word is worth looking for. Near the end, remember that both players get one last turn after the bag empties and leftover tiles cost nothing: there is no reason to dump a high-value tile for a few points if a bigger play is available.
Limits
Crossplay checks words against the NASPA Word List (NWL2023). We use the public-domain ENABLE list (172,823 words), which agrees on nearly all everyday and short words but not every rare one. If the game rejects a suggestion, play the next one down. Letters on the board are counted at face value, so a blank already on the board makes the real score a little lower.
Frequently asked questions
How many points is a sweep in Crossplay?
Using all seven tiles in one turn adds 40 points, compared with 50 for a bingo in Scrabble and 35 in Words With Friends.
Is the Crossplay centre square a bonus?
Yes. The centre star is a double word square, so the first word of the game scores double.
Which dictionary does Crossplay use?
The NYT says Crossplay uses the NASPA Word List 2023. This solver uses ENABLE, which is very close for common words.
Do leftover tiles cost points at the end?
No. When the bag is empty each player has one final turn, and any tiles left in your tray are not subtracted.
Is this an official New York Times tool?
No. It is an independent helper and is not affiliated with The New York Times.
