Worked example
The board above starts with WINTER and OTTER and the rack JADESLU. The top move is ADJURES, played across from row 11, column 5, for 112 points. Here is how that score adds up:
| Letter | Square | Points |
|---|---|---|
| a | double word | 1 |
| d | plain square | 2 |
| j | double letter | 20 |
| u | plain square | 2 |
| r | already on the board | 1 |
| e | plain square | 1 |
| s | double word | 1 |
- Letters in ADJURES: 28 points, × 4 for the word squares = 112.
- No crossing words are formed, so nothing is added for them.
- Only 6 of the tiles are played, so there is no 40-point bonus.
- Total: 112.
How the Wordfeud solver works
Copying your board
Pick Across or Down under Typing goes, tap the first square of a word and type it; the cursor follows the direction you chose. Arrow keys move between squares and Backspace deletes. Add your rack, up to seven tiles with ? for a blank, and press Find best moves. Tap any move in the list to preview it: the new tiles are highlighted on the grid.
Standard board vs random board
The grid uses Wordfeud's standard board, which has triple letter squares in the four corners and triple word squares on the edges. Wordfeud also lets you start a game on a random board, where the bonus squares are shuffled. On a random board the moves listed are still legal, because legality does not depend on bonus squares, but the points will not match. In that case, look further down the list for the moves that land on the bonus squares of your own board.
How a move is scored
The solver tries every word you can build from your rack and the letters in each row and column, at every square. It keeps a play only if it connects to the board, does not run into another tile at either end, and makes valid words in both directions. Scoring follows Wordfeud: letter values first, then letter bonuses under the tiles you place this turn, then word bonuses for the whole word. Two word bonuses in one word multiply. Each crossing word scores in full, and using all seven tiles adds 40 points. Blanks are worth 0, so the solver uses your real tiles first.
| Points | Letters (English) |
|---|---|
| 1 | A E I L N O R S T |
| 2 | D U |
| 3 | G M |
| 4 | B C F H P V W Y |
| 5 | K |
| 8 | X |
| 10 | J Q Z |
Tips
Two word bonuses on one line can multiply a modest word by four, so check the edge rows and columns when they are open. A J, Q, X or Z on a triple letter square that also forms a crossing word scores it twice. Tiles left on your rack when the game ends are subtracted from your score, so late in the game it pays to get rid of high-value letters rather than hold them for a big play that may never come.
Limits
We use the public-domain ENABLE list (172,823 words). Wordfeud lets you choose between US English and international English word lists; ENABLE is close to the US list but not identical, so check unusual words before you rely on them. Only English letter values are built in; other language versions of Wordfeud use different values and letters. Letters already on the board are scored at face value, so a blank on the board makes the real score a little lower.
Frequently asked questions
How many bonus points do you get for using all seven tiles in Wordfeud?
40 points, added after everything else. Scrabble gives 50 and Words With Friends 35.
Does it work with a random Wordfeud board?
The words it suggests are still legal, but the points assume the standard board. Pick the moves that hit your own bonus squares.
Which dictionary does it use?
The ENABLE list, which closely matches Wordfeud's US English list. The international English list accepts some extra words this solver will not suggest.
Can I solve Words With Friends or Crossplay boards too?
Yes, with their own boards and values: use the Words With Friends solver or the Crossplay solver.
Is it affiliated with Wordfeud?
No. It is an independent helper.
