Letter Boxed solver

Enter the 12 letters of your Letter Boxed square, three per side. The solver lists every word that follows the rules (at least three letters, never two letters from the same side in a row) and the two-word solutions that use all 12 letters, where the second word starts with the last letter of the first.

Worked example

Our practice board has RME on the top, YTA on the right, ION on the bottom, LCS on the left. The first solution above is ANCESTORS then SIMILARLY. Check the side rule on ANCESTORS: A (right) → N (bottom) → C (left) → E (top) → S (left) …; no two neighbours share a side. ANCESTORS ends in S, so SIMILARLY must start with S, and together the two words use all 12 letters.

How Letter Boxed works

Letter Boxed is a daily puzzle from The New York Times. Twelve letters sit around a square, three on each side. You make words by tracing from letter to letter, and the rules are strict:

How the solver finds solutions

The solver goes through our dictionary and keeps each word of three or more letters that uses only your 12 letters and never puts two letters from the same side next to each other. For two-word solutions it pairs every valid word with every valid word that starts with its last letter, and keeps the pairs whose letters together cover all 12. Pairs made of common words are listed first, because those are the ones the puzzle's own word list is most likely to accept.

Tips if you'd rather solve it yourself

Start with the awkward letters. Letters such as Y, V, K or Q have few partners, so plan the word that uses them first. Words ending in a letter that starts many words (S, T, E, R) make good first words, because they leave plenty of options for the second. A long first word that sweeps through vowels on different sides usually leaves just three or four letters for the second word.

If you only want a nudge, look at the single-word list: the words at the top cover the most letters, and their last letter tells you where your second word has to start.

Limits

The New York Times checks words against its own list, which is not public. We use the public-domain ENABLE dictionary, so a rare word we suggest may be rejected, and the official puzzle may accept a word we don't have. Proper nouns and hyphenated words are never allowed in either.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules for Letter Boxed words?

Words must be at least three letters long, consecutive letters must come from different sides of the square, and each word must begin with the last letter of the word before it. Letters may be reused.

Is a one-word solution possible?

Only if a single word uses all 12 letters while obeying the side rule. It is rare; when our dictionary has one, the solver lists it above the two-word solutions.

Does this show the official answer for today?

No. It solves whatever board you type in, so it works for today, past puzzles and boards you make up. The official solution is one of many valid ones; any solution in two words is as good as the official one.

Why did the game reject a word from the solver?

The game uses its own dictionary. Ours is the public-domain ENABLE list, which includes some rare words the game leaves out. Try the next solution in the list; common-word pairs are listed first.
