Worked example: searching and combining

Type heart in the search box and 34 emojis stay visible, from 🥰 smiling face with hearts, 😍 smiling face with heart-eyes, 😻 smiling cat with heart-eyes to ♥️ heart suit. Type cat and you get 14. Most are cats, but search matches any part of a name, so 🪪 identification card and 🈸 Japanese “application” button show up too.

To build a string, tap 🎉 party popper, then ❤️ red heart, then ✨ sparkles. Each tap copies that emoji on its own and adds it to Your emojis, which now reads 🎉❤️✨. Press Copy to copy all three together. Here is where the emojis on this page come from:

How copy and paste emoji works

Copying

An emoji is just a text character (or a short run of characters), so copying one is the same as copying a letter. When you tap an emoji, the page puts it on your clipboard with your browser's copy function and shows a short "Copied" message. Paste it anywhere that accepts text: messages, social posts, emails, documents, file names and most forms. If your browser blocks clipboard access, the message says so; select the emojis in the Your emojis box and copy them by hand instead. Clear empties the box.

Where the list comes from

The 1,906 emojis come from the official Unicode emoji list, in Unicode's own order, categories and subcategories. Search uses Unicode's short English names, such as "face with tears of joy" for 😂. It is not a keyword or slang search, so "lol" or "love" may find nothing; try what the emoji shows instead ("tears", "heart"). Emojis added after Emoji 16.0 are left out on purpose, because many phones and computers can't display them yet and would show an empty box.

Skin tones and combined emojis

We show the default yellow skin tone only, which keeps the page fast. On most phones you can pick another tone after pasting by holding the emoji. 248 of the emojis here are built from several emojis joined by an invisible character called a zero-width joiner, such as families, some professions and 🏳️‍🌈. On a system that doesn't know a combination, it shows the separate pieces side by side.

Why emojis look different on each device

Unicode decides which emojis exist and what they mean, not what they look like. Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft and others each draw their own versions, so the same character can look quite different on the receiving phone. The 262 country and region flags are a special case: each is a pair of hidden letters (a country code), and Windows shows them as two letters rather than a flag picture.

Tips

Combine emojis to say more than one can: weather plus a face, or a food plus a heart. For a long string, tap everything first, then copy once at the end. On a computer you can also open the built-in emoji picker (Windows key + . on Windows, Control + Command + Space on a Mac), but searching here works the same in every browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy an emoji?

Tap or click it. It is copied straight away, and a short message confirms it. Then paste it with Ctrl+V, Command+V or a long press.

How many emojis are on this page?

1,906, from Unicode's official list up to Emoji 16.0, in the default skin tone.

Why does an emoji show as a box or two letters?

The device you pasted it on does not have that emoji in its font. Older phones miss newer emojis, and Windows shows country flags as two letters.

Can I copy several emojis at once?

Yes. Tap each one to add it to Your emojis, then press Copy.

Why can't I find an emoji by searching?

Search uses Unicode's official names, which describe what the emoji shows. Search for "tears" rather than "lol". Country flags are found by the country name, like japan.

Can I get other skin tones?

This page shows the default tone. Most phones and the Windows and Mac emoji pickers let you choose a tone; the tone is part of the emoji, so it pastes as chosen.
