Saved sentences
Worked example: how a silly sentence is built
The last sentence in the list above was not written as a whole. The generator took one phrase from each of four lists and joined them in order:
| Slot | Phrase picked | Choices in list |
|---|---|---|
| Who | a nervous penguin | 15 |
| Did | tried to juggle | 15 |
| What | seventeen pancakes | 15 |
| Where | in the library | 15 |
Result: A nervous penguin tried to juggle seventeen pancakes in the library. Because every slot is picked on its own, the four lists give 15 × 15 × 15 × 15 = 50,625 possible silly sentences.
How the random sentence generator works
Three kinds of sentence
Everyday sentences (70) and questions (30) come from a fixed list we wrote ourselves. Each one is complete, grammatical and family-friendly, so they are safe for a classroom. Silly sentences are assembled on the spot from the four short lists shown in the example. They always follow the same pattern (someone, did something, to something, somewhere), which makes them handy for grammar practice: the subject, verb, object and place are easy to point at.
Mixed draws from the everyday and question lists, and roughly one sentence in four is a silly one.
The length filter
Short means up to 8 words; long means 9 words or more. Words are counted by spaces, so "couldn't" is one word. Of the fixed sentences, 27 everyday sentences and 14 questions are short. The filter does not apply to silly sentences, which are all about the same length.
If you ask for more sentences than a list holds (for example 20 short questions when only 14 exist), you get every match and a note saying so. Nothing is padded with sentences of another type.
Repeats
A single batch never shows the same sentence twice. Separate batches are independent, so a sentence you saw earlier can come back. Use the saved list to keep the ones you like while you keep generating.
Ideas for using random sentences
Writing prompts. Use one sentence as the first line of a story, or generate three and fit them into the beginning, middle and end. A silly sentence makes a good title for a short, funny piece.
English practice. Ask learners to turn a statement into a question, into the past or future tense, or into the negative. Questions work as conversation starters for pair work. Silly sentences are good for spotting parts of speech, because each slot is one part.
Typing and handwriting. Ten everyday sentences make a quick, natural-sounding typing drill or a copywork page. Pick "Long" for more stamina, "Short" for younger children.
Games. Read a sentence aloud and have players act it out, draw it, or continue the story one sentence each around the table.
What it does not do
It does not use AI or write new sentences on the fly; the fixed sentences are always the same 100, and the silly ones only combine the phrases in the lists. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you save is sent anywhere. The saved list clears when you leave the page, so copy it first.
Frequently asked questions
Are the sentences safe for kids and classrooms?
Yes. All 100 fixed sentences and every phrase in the silly lists were written for general audiences: no slang, brands or rude words.
How many different sentences can it make?
70 everyday sentences, 30 questions and 50,625 silly combinations (15 × 15 × 15 × 15 phrases).
Why did I get fewer sentences than I asked for?
The length filter can leave fewer matches than you asked for. For example, only 14 questions are 8 words or shorter. Switch the length to Any or choose Mixed to get a full batch.
Can I copy or save the sentences?
Press Copy all to copy the current batch, one sentence per line. Tap a sentence to add it to the saved list below the results.
Can it make sentences from my own words?
No. For a story with your own words in the gaps, try the mad lib generator; for made-up words, use the fake word generator.
